My Story
Handmade Quilt Stories
I have been using a needle and thread in some way most of my life. My mother said I was born with a needle in my fingers…well, almost. All of the sewing ability from my ancestors does seem to have been poured into me and I find it the most enjoyable way to express my emotions and create artwork. When speaking with one of my father’s fellow art professors, I stated that I was not good at drawing or painting, but I could sew or embroider. The answer I received was “the needle is your stylus”., and that is true.
The Path to Loving Quilt Making
Like many people, my grandmothers made quilts. I still have many of them sitting in a cedar chest to preserve those quilts made in the early 1900’s. I began by trying to make quilts like them when I was in high school. I was not as successful as I wanted to be. Years later, after things like rotary cutters were invented, I came back to piecing and found my niche. Then it became a matter of using my art background to work with colors and textures and enjoy myself immensely.
My Creative Philosophy
For me quilting is not about following someone else’s pattern. It is about finding meaning in materials and allowing each piece to speak. The colors, textures and patterns of the fabric stashed in my studio inspires me as I pick and choose what compliments each other as I begin the creation process. I believe every quilt holds a story, whether inspired by history, imagination, or everyday life. My goal is to create quilts that are not only beautiful to look at but also deeply personal to experience.
My Artistic Process
I begin each quilt with inspiration—sometimes from a memory, sometimes from shapes and colors that spark my imagination. I play with the fabric to determine the design, choosing each piece with care, and let the quilt unfold naturally. Every stitch is intentional, balancing craftsmanship with creative freedom.
