Arrow to the Sun
This was another one of the pieces I gave to my friend to sell. It was purchased by a member who felt it looked like the family trip to the South west. This was one of my very first quilts. I had just learned how to make those “crowns”, and I was also playing with how best to use the strip piecing and ways it could be placed. Here is the “AI” discussion of the book from which the title inspired my name for the quilt – “Arrow to the Sun is a 1973 short film and 1974 book by Gerald McDermott that retells an Acoma Pueblo tale about a boy born from the sun who searches for his father. After being ridiculed for not having a father, the boy is turned into an arrow and shot to the sun. He must then pass through four ceremonial chambers—lions, serpents, bees, and lightning—to prove his worthiness as the Lord of the Sun‘s son. Upon proving himself, the boy returns to Earth to bring the sun’s spirit and life to the people, who celebrate his return.”
