The Spirit Quilt
The Spirit Quilt was a quilt that I created for Episcopal Diocese of southern Ohio to use for a fundraiser. With the help of a very good friend who encouraged the people going out from church to church to take the quilt with them and sell the raffle tickets, a goodly sum was raised to help the homeless.
I learned in my weaving classes that when the Navajo create their beautiful woven tapestries, there will be a mistake somewhere to allow the spirit to leave the weaving. I told the story to my friend as I also commented that I had a couple of mistakes in the quilt – not noticeable to anyone, but they were there. Thus we named the quilt Spirit Quilt, which was also fitting as it was a church project. The colors were chosen because most schools I know of in Ohio seem to have chosen black and red, and maybe white as school colors. I wanted it to have diocese wide appeal, and it did. The picture does not capture the fact that the red and white areas are composed of strips of various pieces of fabric, they are not just a solid color. There is variation. And the black and white areas are not printed, they are pieced.
