A Quilt for Delia
I have never met Delia. She lives in Brooklyn, but she is my youngest son’s mother-in-law and I wanted to give her a quilt. She is from the Dominican Republic and speaks primarily Spanish. This is actually the second of two quilts that I made, but the other one is basically a very traditional log cabin. This quilt was me thinking about the Dominican Republic – an island in the Caribbean to which I have never been but thought surely there would be many beautiful flowers, sea shells, fish, and sunny days with incredible evening skies. The “island” is a freeform paper pieced form that I drew on paper and then used it to sew on like the regular “crowns”. The sea actually reflects the sky and has constellations floating in it. The slanted piecing around the quilt is inspired by Seminole piecing.
